Everybody gets what they want...

The title of my post is a snippet borrowed from a quote by Ed Seykota - Ed is a legendary trend-following trader and is credited with developing one of the first computerized trading systems.

Ed has been featured in a number of publications, has generated phenomenal (to say the very least) returns through his trading and mentors a whole lot of successful traders, among other things. Ed is awesome. Read Jack Schwager's Market Wizards for more on Ed if you're interested (it's well worth it). Many, including me can only hope to be mentored by someone of Ed's caliber.

Anyway I stole^H^H^H borrowed my title from one of Ed's many insightful (and rather unique) quotes:
"Win or lose, everybody gets what they want out of the market."

Simple...but powerful. Because at the end of the day, everybody does get what they want out of most aspects of life, not just the market...except that we generally don't realize the intricacies of how this came to be. Sometimes we also don't want to acknowledge or accept it either, as Ed also alludes to. But at the end of the day, we sure do get what we want, positive or negative.

I'm not going to go into aspects of psychology, NLP and the like, but let's just say that our entire experience of life is shaped and stems from chain reaction of things that are rooted in our beliefs. Your mind filters inputs based on either corroborating and supporting something you'd like to happen to make you feel good, or protecting you from something that would hurt and make you feel bad. There are many books that attest to this, and many examples I can give of basic principles, but I won't. Suffice to say...the map is not the terrain.

Anyway, I got what I wanted this week. Of late, work has been a little quiet. I'm a 0 or 100 person. No middle-ground. If it's not 100, it may as well be 0. So, quiet doesn't work for me - not in the slightest. I found myself grumpy because I felt like I wasn't doing anything useful and this of course led to a chain reaction where I felt I wasn't particularly productive. Of course, things just got even slower. Then I realized I was getting what I wanted. *bleh*

Needless to say, this week I started trying to do things to create work. Again, with the shift in perspective, I got what I wanted. I'm now in the middle of many, many, many things, and productive as hell, and I love it. I even managed to get myself an apartment on the Upper East Side as part of the mix in between. Life is peachy, as I prep myself to head to Vegas.

Of course, one can start an entire argument about how this applies to trading, and in the same way to hax0ring, and again in the same way to pretty much anything you want to do. Other aspects come into play...but that is beyond the scope of this blog posting (again, many well written volumes exist).

Ok, so I've been quiet lately, I'm sorry. But this is all for now. I think that if one thinks about the theme of this post carefully, a myriad of other thought processes will be spawned. Use it...don't use it...but don't knock it unless you understand it and have tried it.

Thank you, and good night!

Service - Some very pleasant surprises

I'm big on customer service.

So much so, that I've labored the point extensively that running an effective business is about attracting new customers, but more than that, keeping your existing customers, and keeping them happy. Not just doing what they expect, but really delighting them and establishing loyalty.

Well, so far, my experience in the US has been nothing short of an absolute pleasure. What is surprising is that the service that made me really think WOW came across the board!

It started off with AT&T, my new mobile carrier. I walked in, with no Social Security Number, no bank account, nothing except for a credit card. I walked out 5 minutes later with a switched on and fully funtioning BlackBerry, and a smile.

The sales assistant that helped me even gave me her mobile number for when I received my SSN, so that I would deal with her again, even if she wasn't in that branch when I ready, so that it wouldn't put me in an awkward situation. WOW. Stephanie, you rock, if I ran a business, I'd hire you.

Then, my next astounding experience was with my new bank, JP Morgan Chase. I walked into a branch, again with no SSN (as well as no clue). No problem, I saw a personal banker within 2 minutes, explained my situation to him, and walked out 10 minutes later, with a checking account with no monthly charges, and a money market account so I could earn some interest, as well as active internet and telephone banking. The bank also contacted my employer for me, and arranged for payment of my salary into my new account, so that I wouldn't be inconvenienced by having to send a fax. (?!)

What's more, 4 days later, my cheque / debit / ATM card arrived neatly packaged IN THE MAIL! Hold on? In the mail?!? I come from a place where sending anything in the mail is akin to sticking one's head into the open mouth of a crocodile and then tickling its throat. Not only did my stuff arive unmolested and with blazing speed, but nobody removed it from the open porch at my home! My goodness!

Anyway, aside from that little tangent, Jason is now my personal banker, and when he says he will call me to confirm something at 16:00, I can literally set my watch to 15:59 by his call. WOW. Jason will be my banker for good, bar any major disaster, if this performance is anything to go on.

Speaking of the mail, I have two more pleasant experiences - the first was ordering my new business cards. How long from order, to them sitting on my desk by mail delivery? 2 months? 2 weeks? Try 2 days. WOW.

Finally, and this is perhaps the most astounding, my experience with a government department. .gov is notorious for being horrendously inefficient. So, naturally, I had minimal expectations. Well, from the day I applied for my SSN, to the day it arrived (you guessed it...in the mail) was a whole...4 days! 4 days??? The last .gov document I remember applying for took about 4 months *grumbles*. But, none of that this time. The most sensitive of data, unmolested, on the front porch in 4 days. WOW

It really has been an eye opener to me, and one could argue that in tough economic times, such as these, people need to go the extra mile to keep business going. I don't buy that. I just think that customer service is well understood. And do the results show! Makes me think...

Quite a cool quote

So...I used to do a quote of the day thing...here and there...

In honor of that (no, I didn't spell honor wrong, I live in the US now, and that's how it is spelled here) - here is one I thought was pretty cool!

Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming bigger than others think is practical and promising more than others think is possible.

Mmmmkay, that's all

Kicking the tires

So...I made it in one piece (as far as I can tell)...in the US of A, living the American dream...or something...

Well, as chaotic as it was, I made it here, and made it through the week...don't ask me how...getting here was a blur. Between wrapping up the remnants of my life, finishing a project and a report at 1:45am the morning of the day I was leaving, saying my goodbyes to all and sundry in a mad rush, and packing and getting on the plane, I was pretty done by the time I got on...

The week was good though, got into New York on Sunday and headed down to Raleigh, in North Carolina on Monday...beautiful part of the world down there, if a little quiet! It was fun...no rest for the wicked, straight into work my second day in the US, but fun nonetheless.

I'm now officially a corporate warrior again, complete with BlackBerry
and all, as well as Vista...hmmm...we shall see how that works out! Suit and tie and all that good stuff of course...funny, as much as somethings change, others don't...seemed like deja vu getting back into the business situation with my new work! Oh wait, it is deja vu...I worked here before and it's an awesome place to work :>

Anyway, it's time to hit the city, kick the tires, see what it's got and what it has to offer. So far, all is good...I guess I'll be checking in more often, and posting pics at some stage, for those who care.

For now...I must be off...

Adios
